Shri.
Shantilalji Muttha, through his practical understanding of social issues
and problems faced by the Jain community, decided to commit himself and
the BJS to solving these problems. During the early years till 1993, the
focus was on bringing a change in social customs prevalent in the Jain
community. The major issues of concern were health, education, problems
of traditional family business as well as social, marriage and family-related
issues.
Shri Muttha decided to first start working on marriage-related issues,
which he thought would have a long-term impact on the Jain community. Shri
Muttha is recognized as the pioneer in establishing the custom of mass
marriages as a respectable social practice, accepted by all sections of
society. The first mass marriage was held in 1985 where 625 couples participated.
Mass marriages helped in drastic reduction of wasteful expenditure.
