Mulyavardhan

Mulyavardhan is a comprehensive and holistic peace, moral and value education program conceived, designed and implemented by BJS for school children from standards 1st to 10th (Currently being implemented for standards 1st to 4th).

Today's young generation is the target of varied inputs from equally varied sources that is resulting in an overall decline in values and an alarming rise in the traits of arrogance, aggression, intolerance and violence. These traits if unchecked have the potential to severely jeopardize the existence of the very core values of the Indian culture and in turn the Indian society itself.

To reverse this trend it is essential that the present young generation is made aware of the core values and is empowered to internalize these values in order to make choices, judgments and decisions more intelligently and meaningfully. Absorbing these values at an early and receptive age through Education will benefit the youth and definitely ensure enhancement of values in the society at large.

"Mulyavardhan" in Sanskrit means "Enhancement of Values" and it is precisely this enhancement that the program designed and developed by BJS brings about. The academic contents of this program have been designed by a team of experts in the field of education. Fundamental values that are relevant in today's complex world have been identified after thorough research. Learning and imbibing these values would enable each child to discover his/her true self, increase self-esteem and help face the world confidently. BJS firmly believes that internalizing these values right from the formative years will definitely arrest the decline in values observed in the society.

The course consists of modules that are interrelated and interdependent, yet complete and autonomous in themselves. The course is structured keeping in mind the high dropout rates in rural areas. Textbooks, manuals and teaching aids have been separately developed by an in-house team of experts in consultation with primary and secondary school teachers. Care is taken to include local cultural flavour in the teaching material without compromising on the universal context. This makes it amenable to rural and urban schools, both private and under government jurisdiction. The delivery mechanism of these modules is unique and does not depend on the regular teachers for its implementation. Fresh resource persons trained in education are selected from amongst the locally available talent and are given intensive and innovative training. Despite its independence from the school authorities, the program works in close coordination with the system to ensure seamless integration with mainstream education.

In the pilot phase of the program, it is being implemented in more than 1,200 villages in around 500 schools under the district administration. 275 specially trained value educators have imparted Mulyavardhan to around 35,000 school children in the two year period. The impact assessment carried out by Cambridge University Technical Services (CUTS) indicates that the program has helped in improving the interpersonal relationships between students as well as reducing the disciplinary issues among them. This impact assessment has been carried out based on the responses by principals, teachers, coordinators, Mulyavardhan teachers and finally the students themselves. Each group of respondents emerges with very positive feedback on the program indicating their acceptance of the concept and their understanding of the benefits derived from its implementation.

To sum up Mulyavardhan with its structured syllabus, well designed learning content, robust yet flexible delivery mechanism is definitely ready to be launched at the national level as an appropriate vehicle to arrest the decline in values and morals.

An extract from the base document...

Values & morals are a set of principles or standards of behaviour.

They give meaning and strength to a person's character by occupying a central place in one's life; reflect one's personal attitudes and judgements, decisions and choices, behaviour and relationships, dreams and vision. They influence thoughts, feelings and actions. Values guide us to do the right things. They are the guiding principles of life and give direction and bring joy, satisfaction and peace to life. They bring quality to life and become internal guide posts.

In earlier times children used to get their knowledge and skills from education and values from the elders at home after school hours. This trend has changed in the past couple of decades and children spend most of their time in front of the TV or with various modern gadgets or at various classes after school hours, since mostly both parents are working, priorities and lifestyles have changed as also parents do not find enough time to spend with the children to inculcate values. On the contrary, children are turning towards all the undesirable characteristics that are depicted in the media. Thus, there exists a gap in the inculcation of values and morals in the formative years of a child.

BJS believes that the introduction of a new subject for Peace, Moral & Value education along with formal education right from STD I which is the formative period of the child over a sustained period is the only remedy to the issue.

BJS has taken a decision to carry out an experiment by introducing a new subject "Mulyavardhan" to inculcate values & morals among children from STD I to X in a phasewise manner.

BJS realises that, the Mulyavardhan syllabus and its successful and effective implementation needs tremendous effort and patience. At a glance this seems over ambitious and very difficult to achieve in the current Indian social and educational environment. But BJS has developed effective workable implementation strategies to overcome these hurdles.
